Descrizione

La sottofamiglia comprende prevalentemente specie con mwewfusti mwfarampicanti che si avvolgono a spira attorno ai tronchi degli alberi delle mwfqforeste tropicali, ma anche alcune specie a crescita mwfgarbustiva, tipiche degli ambienti semi-aridi.cite-ref-lahaye2005-2-0[2]

Il mwhapolline dei mwhqfiori delle Secamoideae è organizzato in ammassi globulari (mwhgpollinii), simili a quelli presenti nelle mwhwOrchidaceaecite-ref-verhoeven-venter2001-3-0[3]cite-ref-harder2008-4-0[4]. Ciascun fiore presenta cinque mwkapollinari, ognuno con quattro mwkqpollinii; ciascun pollinio è connesso ad un corpuscolo a forma di gancio, che ne favorisce l'aggancio al corpo degli mwkginsetti impollinatori. Tale struttura è simile a quella delle mwkwAsclepiadoideae, nelle quali però sono presenti solo due pollinii per ciascuna mwlaantera.

Distribuzione e habitat

La sottofamiglia comprende circa 200 mwlwspecie, diffuse nella mwmafascia tropicale del mwmqVecchio Mondo.
La maggiore mwmwbiodiversità si concentra in mwnaMadagascar (dove crescono circa la metà delle specie e dei generi noti), nel mwnqSud-est asiatico e in mwngAfrica continentale.
Il genere più numeroso, e con l'mwoaareale più esteso, è mwoqmwogSecamone, con oltre 100 specie presenti in Madagascar, Africa, mwowAsia e mwpaAustralia.cite-ref-klackenberg1992a-5-0[5]cite-ref-goyder1992-6-0[6]cite-ref-klackenberg1992b-7-0[7]cite-ref-klackenberg2001-8-0[8]cite-ref-forster1989-9-0[9]
